Where the word comes from

spondeo — Latin, “I pledge solemnly”, the binding-oath verb of Roman contract law. It is the root of sponsor: the person who stands behind someone else’s word. On Spondea the verb is vouch, and it means the same thing it has always meant — putting your own name at risk for somebody else’s.
